Kissed by the Clouds

August 13, 2025

I always enjoy looking at my drawings for a sculpture and see how a piece evolves, taking 2D to 3D.  Kissed by the Clouds is a sculpture I’ve been imagining for a while, wanting to feature the cloudlike Howlite, which is mainly known as the stone used in years past to make fake Turquoise jewelry (it dyes beautifully).  In my imaginings, the slabbed Howlite would emulate Maynard Dixon’s clouds, racing across the southwestern skyline.

I also wanted to create a landscape where a figure is hidden in the contours and vistas.  As it turns out, most people don’t see the figure in the landscape. I didn’t want to make it too obvious, and once you see it, you can’t help but see it ever after. Work in progress perhaps…?  I’d love your feedback.
